Beer Independence

Was discussing the finer points of the production of beer last night. It seemed like a good idea to try and produce all the essential elements of a beer myself. I'm curious what a beer, whose elements where all produced myself, would taste like. Probably crappy but then it would be my crappy beer.

So here is the plan...

How many varieties of hops you need? And where are you going to get enough land to produce enough barely to ferment to produce enough beer to fulfill the quantities you guys drink? :P
