You are not the first person to be struck by how complicated and ingenious our use of language is. Pre-Anarchist Noam Chomsky built his revolutionary "Universal Grammar" around that idea and you might be interested in checking it out.

Having your Linguistics Professor explain the "Affix-Hopping" Phenomena of the following sentance is quite an experience:

The craziest thing is a 6-year-old can utter that sentence properly in the correct context.
