CHARACTER RELATIONSHIPS: FAMILY
PB: Joan Allen
Nico's stepmother--or she would have been. Margot was not a proper witch, but supported the new lines whole-heartedly, and bound herself to Nico's biological mother, Badia, when they were just teenagers, and despite being complete opposites, they retained that bond throughout their lives. Whether Margot knew that her husband fathered Badia's daughter (that would be Nico) is a mystery. She died when Badia did, due to their tight magical bond. Margot's parents were Laetitia Quillon-Regnier and Etienne Regnier; they both died in her thirties. By all accounts, Margot was a devoted parent, and her children miss her still.
Margot Regnier Angewyn | Would-be stepmother | Deceased
PB: Cheryl Ladd
Nico's would-be step-aunt. Marcella is an extremely kind person, but spends most of her time at home in Provence. She's a little more laid-back than the Angewyns. Additionally, more of a rebel; both of her children were born out of wedlock, and she's never been interested in marriage.
Marcella Regnier | Would-be step-aunt | 56
PB: Dominic West
Nico's would-be second-step-cousin (yes, really), and probably the one she's fondest of; they don't talk much, but they are very companionable when they do. To such an extent it's made Nico's paternal aunt make a few unpleasant comments about who Nico prefers in the family. All the same, if she were ever absolutely lost, she'd probably call Louis, provided it didn't interfere in his life of single fatherhood--he's divorced, and his ex-wife is sort of a recurring bit of trouble.
Louis Regnier | Would-be second-step-cousin, or...friend | 34
PB: Julie Benz
Lucinda is Louis's ex-wife, the mother of his daughter, Lark, and while she isn't a bad person, she does have a really bad drug addiction, and is prone to hitting up basically everyone in the family for money when she's using. Thus far, she has been clean for eight months, the longest record yet.
Lucinda Maddox Regnier | Not even really related, seriously | 36
PB: Lucy Boynton
Ten-year-old Lark is the youngest and only child on the maternal side of the Regnier side of the Angewyn clan, and she can be a bit spoiled, though not in a way where she's demanding of things--she just expects to not have to ask permission and to have free reign. She doesn't enjoy sharing, and prefers the company of adults who praise her on her precociousness to that of her peers. Additionally, she is a shameless tomboy.
Lark Regnier | Professional tree-climber | 10
PB: Matthew Kassovitz
Thomas took a wildly different turn to the rest of his side of the family and became a priest. They were all faintly bemused. He's a serious young man and has no problems with officiating whenever anyone in the family needs it, but he doesn't really share their sense of humor, especially if it gets blasphemous.
Thomas Regnier | Priestly not-cousin | 28
PB: Pauline Collins
While Nico's paternal grandmother is not a witch in the traditional sense, as that power has waned in the Angewyn clan, she remembers her husband's actions (and her husband's father's), and she is an excellent herbalist. She is kind and protective of the children in the family, but steely; she only questions the family's morally questionable historical activities when they are harmful to the new generation.
Myra Goldhawk Angewyn | Paternal grandmother | 77
PB: Frances McDormand
Nico thinks as Eleanor as her "nice aunt" (vs Flora, who is not a blood relative, but nevertheless a part of the family). She doesn't see her often, and isn't close with any of Eleanor's children, but appreciates her dedication to making a peaceful home, and suspects that her own sister, Rhea, takes after Eleanor.
Eleanor Angewyn Wolsey | Paternal aunt | 56
PB: Kevin Costner
Eleanor's husband, Elias. Nico thinks he's a creepy workaholic. Which is, but he is a harmless one.
Elias Wolsey | Paternal uncle by marriage | 56
PB: Julia Stiles
Gemma is Nico's cousin, a registered nurse, and apparently Very Responsible; Nico and all of her siblings have suffered comparisons about why can't they be like Gemma, who has literally never gotten into trouble once in her life. And not, as near as Nico can tell, because she gets away with it--she just consistently follows all the rules. And enjoys it. She does, however, decidedly wear the pants in her marriage.
Gemma Wolsey Harding | Paternal cousin | 30
PB: David Lewis
"Al," as he is generally called by most people, is mild-mannered and one hundred times more laid-back than virtually anyone else in the entire Angewyn family, which allows him to efficiently avoid the majority of them at family gatherings. Because they are crazy, like rich, angry piranhas.
Alastair Halding | Paternal cousin-in-law | 36
PB: Cassandra Sawtell
Maxine is nine, a nerd, and talks really fast.
Maxine Halding | Paternal second-cousin | 9
PB: Daniel Bruhl
Oliver, in contrast to Gemma, was a terrible child who got into everything and had some trouble with the law. He got married really young with an equally young woman and sort of shaped up since then, but his house is generally pretty messy and his kids are loud and rambunctious. He's fine with this. He is constantly being harassed to take a higher-paying, more white-collar job by the older generation in the family.
Oliver Wolsey | Paternal cousin | 28
PB: Ella Scott Lynch
Frederica is Oliver's wife, and she works at a clothing shop. She was less rowdy than him as a child, but is used to a lower-income huge family where everyone yelled all the time, and it doesn't actually occur to her that her sons might be a little wild for some people's comfort. She figures they'll grow out of it.
Frederica Sinclair Wolsey | Paternal cousin-in-law | 26
PB: Raban Bieling
Nico gets along with kids really well, so she doesn't mind Duncan per se, but she is aware that he is either going to turn out to be a mad scientist or an evil dictator. He's usually seen bossing around his little brother.
Duncan Wolsey | Paternal second-cousin, hellspawn | 8
PB: Dakota Goyo
Callum is tiny and rambunctious, if well-meaning. He manages to get hurt a lot, which has caused everyone in the family to try to keep a closer eye on him, even his sassy older brother.
Callum Wolsey | Paternal second-cousin | 5
PB: Neal McDonough
A Former military (Navy, officer, naturally) and probably the most obviously intimidating man in the family, Gregory runs his household with the same tight-ship attitude he had in his Navy days. Of course, his children are not soldiers, and they're a lot less inclined to obey all of the time, especially now that most of them are independent. He pretends to be fine with this, except when he doesn't.
Gregory Angewyn | Paternal uncle | 53
PB: Sela Ward
Flora may have married in, but she is all about the Family Name, and can be overbearing. She's not a fortress or heartless, but she is prone to accidental cruelty in the name of getting her way. She and Nico have had a few fights of varying severity over the years, and Flora mostly leaves her alone now.
Flora Braxton Angewyn | Paternal aunt-in-law | 54
PB: Dominic Cooper
Hugh is technically the oldest of Flora and Greg's kids (he's Faith's twin by six minutes), something he takes pretty seriously. He has a good nine-to-five job, takes care of his family, and tries not to roll his eyes at his mother. His friends are a good bit rowdier and frequently try to drag him out to have some fun.
Hugh Angewyn | Paternal cousin | 29
PB: Rashida Jones
Hugh's wife is a commercial artist and illustrator; she spends a lot of time trying to avoid familial pressure for grandchildren. They haven't been married for very long, anyway!
Gloria Chandler Angewyn | Paternal cousin-in-law
PB: Heike Makatsch
Young, ambitious, kind of heartless--Faith is an excellent example of young, privileged professionals worldwide. She's one of the few people who looks kind of like Nico, which is reassuring (even if she gets that from Flora and thus not any of Nico's shared blood, and furthermore is...white, which Nico is not), but Faith's almost too remorselessly driven for Nico's tastes. Which is saying something.
Faith Angewyn | Paternal cousin | 29
PB: Krysten Ritter
Nico thinks Sasha's a bit princessy and ditzy sometimes, but Sasha's a nice girl who likes a good time. Just...a good time indoors, in civilization; this is not someone Nico would ever ask to go camping, as an example.
Sasha Angewyn | Paternal cousin | 25
PB: Roger Daltrey
Richard Angewyn is the current head of the Angewyn family. He is not a malicious person, but is somewhat self-indulgent and rarely remorseful for his actions; he only seems to care genuinely for his family members, and that is burdened with the expectation they will do as he says. He can be very charming, however. He encourages a degree of competition with his children, and while he is vaguely aware he contributed to Nico's feelings of emotional isolation, he figures she must be over it by now.
Richard Angewyn | Father of the year, y'all | 58
PB: Darren Boyd
August is the oldest sibling, and thus he is expected to look after the rest of them a bit--and he does, but he's not always that involved, because he trusts them to look after themselves. This approach suits Nico.
August Angewyn | Older brother | 35
PB: Giovanna Mezzogiorno
August's Italian wife, who has recently become extremely religious, and is invested in sending their son to a properly Catholic school. They're fighting a little over it, though they're trying to stay discreet.
Tatiana Bagni | Sister-in-law | 33
PB: Max Burkholder
Jasper is Nico's nephew. Bright, but a little shy, he's prone to hiding behind his mother's skirts.
Jasper Angewyn | Paternal nephew | 5
PB: Tamzin Outhwaite
Nico's oldest sister, and absolutely the matriarch-in-training. Libby and Flora get along well, put it that way.
Elizabeth 'Libby' Angewyn Sutton | Older sister | 33
PB: Stephen Campbell Moore
Libby's husband. A businessman who is less concerned with appearances than you might think, Julian does well at his job but has had a few problems with infidelity in the past. Libby is trying to forgive him.
Julian Sutton | Brother-in-law | 37
PB: Abigail Breslin
Quiet--unusually stoic, really, for her age, Delia is a bit of a daydreamer who endeavors to do well at school, but would rather be doing anything else. She does like to read a lot, though, just on her own terms.
Delia Sutton | Paternal niece | 11
PB: Nathan Gamble
In contrast to his sister, Micah is a sporty little kid who likes school pretty well. He's popular with his classmates, but can be a tiny bit of a bully. So far, his parents haven't noticed, but his sister has.
Sasha Angewyn | Paternal nephew | 7
PB: Rachael Sterling
Rhea is the homebody of the family. She has a lot of kids, despite being pretty young, and is focused on staying close to her roots and gardening. She is aware that her father didn't want her to marry her husband, but did anyway, and it's not like Tobias is a laybout or anything, so Richard adapted.
Rhea Angewyn Dryden | Older sister | 31
PB: Ryan Robbins
Tobias is Rhea's outdoorsy, socially awkward husband. Nico thinks he is great. (That's not sarcasm, she enjoys awkward, outdoorsy people, and he relaxes a lot more with his family members, anyway.)
Tobias Dryden | Brother-in-law | 38
PB: Andrew Chalmers
Otto is tiny and basically like his dad's junior in almost every way; his dad is his hero. He sincerely hopes this next baby is a boy, because he is so tired of being overpowered by sisters.
otto Dryden | Paternal nephew | 10
PB: Mackenzie Foy
Nico would never say she has a favorite niece or nephew, but it's totally Manon.
Manon Dryden | Paternal niece | 8
PB: Mackenzie Smith
Maisie and her sister Manon are both tiny musicians, and basically inseparable.
Maisie Dryden | Paternal niece | 6
PB: Julia Wrobleska
Willa is the tiniest of the family, and emulates her older sisters in every way she can. She often ends up clinging to her big brother's hand, though, because there are four of them, and that's how it works out.
Willa Dryden | Paternal niece | 3
PB: Kate Hudson
Amabel is absolutely the sister that Nico is closest with, which is to say 'they talk about things beyond the weather'. Amabel is the only other sibling to move to London, where she is starting up her own bakery. She is perky. Sometimes alarmingly so. She also has no desire to get married right now.
Amabel | Older sister | 28
PB: Alice Eve
Louisa is an aspiring actress, and she doesn't even care if she's an especially good actress--this is her way of getting her stand-out position in their large, competitive family. She's engaged to a producer, and is planning on moving to Los Angeles (or even London, full-time) as soon as she's married.
Louisa Angewyn | Older sister | 26
PB: Toby Stephens
Graham and Nico hate each other without any of them even doing anything genuinely malicious, it's great. She thinks he treats her sister like a ditz, and he thinks she takes everything far too seriously.
Graham Whitby | Future brother-in-law | 30
PB: Joe Anderson
While his name may seem uncommonly normal in this family, Jason was named for 'and the Argonauts'. He's planning on managing businesses and getting into restauranteur work, but he's also busy being kind of a mess; he's young, it's allowed. He and Nico talk reasonably often and if she goes home, he's likely to be there.
Jason Angewyn | Older brother | 25
