Jealousy is tricky. To be honest, I'm only jealous when it's a woman I'd want to have a relationship with. Ex's I don't care about anymore could get fucked in front of me while I peacefully read a book, where as seeing some guy standing next to a girl I'm attracted to, even if she's a complete stranger, does elicit a bit of jealousy. It's also not a black&white kind of emotion for all people. It can go from subtle and easily controlled, to a full on rage of hormones. I think people who can experience the range of that emotion are usually better able to control it, and those who just go from from 0 to 60 in an instant are the crazy wife beaters. And whatever the roots of the emotion are evolutionarily, the rest of our mind has evolved to a point that makes nearly all emotions incredibly complex processes. Jealousy, fear, love, you name it. People experience intense, base emotions, for some incredibly complex reasons. We might act like monkeys sometimes, but we're far from it
