Okay, obviously I dont know you; but dont you think thats a rather insensitive question to ask and a very shallow way of asking it? You make it seem like all you care about is hearing the latest bit of juicy gossip. Think about it. "!!! omgod..why?" I'm sure if he cared to elaborate he would have. Or you could have asked him one on one. At least make it seem like you care.
