"Might I venture a suggestion, Mister Pullings?"

Chadd looked over at the other lieutenant. He made a mental note to eventually ask the young man for the date on his commission, so they could determine seniority. Perhaps it didn't matter here, but he wanted to know personally whether he ought to stick with 'Mister Pullings' or if he should be adding a 'sir.'

"Yes, Mister Chadd?"

Tom was more quiet than usual. Not that he was a loud person by nature, but everything about him was muted as he carefully loaded his second pistol. Now and then he would peer out beyond the wagons to see if their window of opportunity had yet closed.

"It may be in our best interest to avoid any food in this place. Unopened bottles, perhaps, but we don't know what... happened... to these people, sir." And if it might be passed through the food or if the food supplies were somehow contaminated because of it, they did not need to bring that with them when they finally got out of here.

Laura leaped down from her perch on a ledge. "There is no point waiting for too many people. They will make too much noise."

Tom nodded briskly, impressed by the jump but not distracted by it. Now it was time to act, not time to oo and aw over little more than a hop.

"We need to move now, before they come this direction. One quick sweep of the supplies, no muss. Avoid killing any of them. They're still people."

The lieutenant cocks his pistol though, nervous more than anything. "At least keep it quiet if it must be done."

With that he shimmied between the barricade of wagons and went into the dark.
