Welcome to the Oregon Trail!
It's an adventure! A noble migration! Fame and fortune await you at the end of the trail! Are you ready?! Have you bought your oxen and readied your wagons?!
But what's that? You have important business to attend to? You're not sure how you got here, and you want to go home? NONSENSE! Of course you didn't wake up to find yourself already a day's journey from Independence, Missouri, mysteriously in a wagon with four other strangers, why, you've been here the whole time! Don't you remember?! No? Well, that's alright! It doesn't matter now, you're already on THE OREGON TRAIL!
The catch? It's actually a video game. While you may be on the Oregon Trail, unusual and incredible things may occur along the way; things that seem entirely too out of the ordinary for your run-of-the-mill 19th century trek to Oregon. For you see, you have been ported directly into the video game. Your fate lies in the hands of one creative and questionable all-mighty player, pulling all of the strings behind the crumb-covered keyboard of an Apple II. At first, his manipulations are going to be minor. Weird things. Out of place. Then, it's going to get more drastic. Nothing will make sense. What, exactly, is going on?
That player's will, of course. But you don't know this.
Not yet.
Now, your character is officially along for the ride - whether they want to be or not. They've woken up to find themselves sleeping in the back of a wagon that's already on its way to Oregon, a small digital watch (and $200.00) having been given to them with which to communicate on a network to other wagon members - having been discovered, of course, after raiding abandoned wagons. On the screen of this watch, your character is informed of their PROFESSION alongside their NAME, and also given the options to make video, voice, or text posts to the network.
But no big deal, he or she can just leave and find his or her own way back to their world, right?
Not going to be that easy.
If your character tries to strike out on his or her own and leave the wagon train, they'll be successful. ...For a while. They might manage to walk two, maybe three hours once they leave the wagons behind them. But sooner rather than later, they're going to find a odd sight ahead of them: the wagons. The same happens if your character simply sits down on the trail and refuses to budge. The wagons will trundle out of sight, the dust will fade, but then a short while later they'll be seen coming up the trail again, from the opposite direction they'd just gone down it.
A mystery, isn't it? Sure makes abandoning the trail difficult!
So since you're here, might as well enjoy yourself! Buy supplies at forts, steal supplies from the other wagons! Write nasty notes about each other on the network, find the writers of the nasty notes and pummel them to relieve stress! Shoot a deer, break an arm, die of dysentery! And maybe, maybe, you might even make it to Oregon.
But don't count on it.
Mod Note: The game begins in Independence, Missouri! (Characters that are brought into the game after it has begun are woken up, sleeping in the back of the wagon as the premise suggests). Characters in Missouri will be able to find wagon parties, stock up on supplies, talk to other characters and ultimately get ready to go on the trail. There will be a moderator post that lets your characters know when they've headed off to begin on the trail, and from then on, you're moving through the harsh wilderness of the United States on your way to Oregon! The trip may take months, could even take half a year.
You'll run into snakes, famine, draught -- you name it. You'll have to hunt for your food, but don't go trying to take that whole buffalo back to your wagon with you! You can only carry half of it. Shot yourself in the butt while you were struggling to wrangle a bear even though you've got perfect aim? It's all part of the game! Aaaaand, you might wanna rub some salt into that wound. That's an option, right? Hopefully you haven't used all your bandages for toilet paper.
Mod posts will be made when your characters approach major events! Forts, rivers to ford, great American sights where you can take pict--oh wait. Your characters will also be notified of any major diseases that are making the 'rounds, though they're probably going to catch their own all on their lonesome without needing to be informed. Also, you'd probably better be on the look-out for snakes. I hear those bites can be, well, deadly.
So long and good luck!
