I have a very varied friendslist. From, “No one is gay in the books, you freak. Can’t you read?” to “Everyone is gay in the books, you freak. Can’t you read?” Most of us fall somewhere in between. I think it’s unrealistic to think that no one is gay in an entire universe of books. Thinking everyone is gay is unrealistic too. It’s fun mind ( Read more... )

...there’s some part of me that wishes she’s shut the hell up.

I said, "I wish she would mind her gob before there's nothing left." So, yeah.

Doesn't bother me at all if he's gay. But it did cross my mind why she tells us this.Is it to shock the reports etc and cause some fan fiction. Also when she said Neville and Hannah ship. I thought she was just throwing stuff out there making it up as she goes along. I mean in the live web chat she was asked if Luna ended up with Neville and she said no it was too tidy. So why not say that he marries someone else etc.
Either way this ship doesn't bother me. I wonder what she will come out with next!

I agree with you. Including it in the book would have made a more powerful, lasting statement. She says her books are a statement for tolerance, and if she'd just put it in the books, a passing mention, it would have made that statement so much... stronger? Or just plain visible. (I thought the epilogue was too conservative for all her pro-tolerance speech).

And yeah, why did she say it just now? Had she heard some of the criticisms hurled against her, for not having included a single (openly) gay character in her books?

As a slash fan I liked the news, of course. But I can't help thinking that Rowling should really leave the text alone now. And if she has some stories she'd like to add, why not write another book? Or better yet: fanfiction?

That being said….there’s some part of me that wishes she’s shut the hell up. That’s right. I’d said it. As far as I’m concerned book canon is the only canon. If she couldn’t manage to get it in several thousand pages - in seven books - then let it go. If you want to give us a glimpse of a post book seven world then write another book.

Absolutely my view. I'm sick to death of her giving interviews, and wish she'd give it a rest for a few months. Let the books speak for themselves, and if they can't, let the fic writers do so.

I'm going to be a voice of dissent here. Don't get me wrong -- I've said these exact same words myself, most recently when she revealed that Harry went straight into Auror training and didn't do his 7th year at Hogwarts. I'd just posted a fic in which he'd declared his intentions to go back and do that final year, so I was a bit miffed to have it shafted. Plus, her inconsistencies can be aggravating.

Here's the thing: Rowling doesn't give a shit what we think. It's not about us, and never has been. I think of the comment she made about rabid Harry/Hermione shippers, and how she specified it was adults who behaved the worst. What matters to her are what kids -- the kids who look up to Harry and Dumbledore and think Snape is mean and nasty -- think. And the kids, for the most part, love these little tidbits. They're like jelly beans raining from the sky ( ... )
