Ponderings on the Offensive Nature of Bones

Let me start out by saying that I'm a very easy-going person. It's rather difficult to offend me ( Read more... )

This isn't the first time Brennan has said something socially awkward and insulting while trying to get her point of view across, is it?

It seems like a narrow focus. I assume Booth didn't automatically take her side at that scintillating logic point she made. The only proper response to "Ur stupid" is "No ur."

Brennan's not perfect, right? You've found her flaw. Try and forgive her, rather than losing something you love.

There are very few atheist characters on television, be comforted by that, and by the fact that one of them is simply a mad, adorable scientist.

I've been trying. I don't know, maybe it's the fact that for years, my best friend has been an atheist whom I semi-regularly got into "conversations" about creation vs evolution with. All I know is that, while uncomfortable with the comments in the past, this time I find myself genuinely insulted by it.

Ohhhh. I'm sorry that I'm so late to reply to this, but I still wanna say something.

I love Bones as a show and I get that Brennan's line upset you. I have to admit that I do find them offensive, too, as I'm a believing Christian as well ( ... )

Oh, I totally messed up with the reply button. This was supposed to be a reply to jediknighttalin's original post. Not to one of the comments. Sorry.

Write to Hart Hanson! I'm sure he'd be interested in your POV, and he might even have Brennan confront her prejudice, you never know. Hart's really into what the fans think. His contact info's probably on fox.com/bones, or if not, I can message TJ on Facebook and ask him how to write to them.

*shrug* I tweeted him the link to this. If he reads it, great, if not, whatever

Good start! I just think he'd like to know he's alienating an entire segment of his viewership, if he doesn't already realize that. He seemed overly worried about losing people when they introduced Hannah, so...who knows.

Well, here's hoping, then. I mean, I think I worded it politely and everything. At the very least, I didn't swear LOL But it wasn't an angry rant, anyway, more of an upset rant, so *shrug*

I applaud you for being able to cut ties, actually. I've often times found myself in the same boat. I'm a worship leader and small group leader at church, and I am most definitely cringing most of the time that I watch most of anything on television today. (Glee just did an episode titled "Grilled Cheesus" that has totally turned me off to the show.) It did feel like a particular jab when Brennan made that statement, but I was able to take it as a comment from the character without being personally offended. I absolutely see how that could happen though. Add that to the fact that it is so hard to come by individuals anymore these days that are intelligent, thoughtful, and well-researched that still find that God is the logical conclusion and it becomes even harder to stick around. I wish that you would though, just to have another like-minded soul here! But I respect your decision as well. Good for you and sticking to your guns!

Thanks :) I guess I just feel that the writers crossed a line with that, y'know? Sure, all the "superstitious" comments were annoying, but "dimwitted" is just plain insulting *shakes head* Not to mention... it felt rather OOC for Brennan. In the past she's made a rather clear distinction between one's "superstitious" beliefs and one's intelligence, being that she knows Booth is intelligent (albeit not as much so as she is) and seems to fully accept that he believes in God, etc.

I'm someone that doesn't make fun of people and their believes, I always let them have their own opinion and I have mine very strongly about things. But don't blame Brennan/Emily, she's not the one that asks for this to be said, Emily is very strong willed and will accept everyone's believe for what they are ( ... )

Oh, I don't blame Emily at all! I adore me some Emily Deschanel on so many levels LOL I do, however, feel that the writers crossed a line, and unfortunately, given my beliefs and my personal emotional structure, that's not a line that can be uncrossed with me. Some people can brush it off or whatever, but I'm just not like that.

And yeah, it can be painful. I think, like I hinted at in an above comment, it's especially painful for me because I've had a friend who did have that opinion, and in fact, once told me directly, that, in her opinion, anyone who didn't believe in evolution was a moron. So to have that personal experience, and then to have that opinion shoved back in my face like it was on Bones, it's just too much.

I understand completely, it would be very painful and to have it spoken out in public for millions to see that can be the last drop in the bucket. I hope you have many friends that truly believe in what you believe, because going through life alone in those things can be twice as hard. I myself have to go through a family that loves meat and I'm a vegetarian, it's not easy but I accept for who they are and their beliefs, but they don't accept mine =(.

I can top that! LOL I'm a vegetarian in a family of farmers/ranchers living in a tourist town where hunting/fishing is the attraction LOL Although I did recently find out that the bartender at the motel is a vegetarian, too... Never met him, tho LOL

I was pretty ticked off how they brought that up in the last episode again, but I'm used to it so much IRL that it kind of does not phase me anymore. I totally understand your decision - everybody has a point where they can't take it anymore.

The one thing that helps me is that I know at least is David Boreanaz is a Christian. I'm not going to say devout, but he is sending his kid to CCD/Catholic school. I've never heard anything like that from the Hollywood crowd (besides Paris Hilton, but she got kicked out). Idk why I find that comforting, but I guess because he can take those insults against his faith and still play the role he does.

I agree too - you should reach out to HH or ask your friend above to send TJ a message (jealous). I'm sure other people feel the same way.
