Super dork time (Diedra will like this one)

So, I was watching Star Trek today during lunch, and it was the episode where there was a hearing to determine whether or not Data was sentient. Good episode BTW, but that's not the point of this entry. I thought it was interesting when the prosecution asked Data what his total memory and computational speed was. Get this ( Read more... )

So Data is esspensive but really retarded. j/k

You're right, I did like this one.. it's interesting to me that 20 years ago, they came up with so much storage for Data, and so slow (by today's standard) a processing speed.

THEN AGAIN... getting all that speed and storage in a chip the size that Data has (and not in a massive machine taking up a room) is amazing by almost any century's standards.

...when are we hangin again?

I agree with the earlier commenter. We carry cell phones with puny processors because the tradeoff of size and power consumption fits their use. Apparently Data doesn't need hundreds of TFLOPS to be a sentient (alleged sentient since the ruling hasn't taken place yet) android. If any had any more power he'd probably need an away-shuttle charger cord, and that would be embarrassing (once he get his emotion chip). And he might have to be bigger: a bulkier cybernetic organism, living tissue over (metal) endoskeleton. No wait, that's the T-800.
