Oh yes, it IS Black History Month...Whatever

I ceased being excited about Black History Month a long time ago.  Why?  Because no one ever seems to learn anything from it.  From Harry Reid's "negro dialect" comment (WTF is a negro dialect anyway?  Do black people from Europe or the Caribbean have one? I certainly don't have one; on several occasions I've been mistaken for Caucasian over the ( Read more... )

It isn't that I don't care about black history month; it just bugs me that the other 11 months somehow equate to whitewashing. Black history, women's history, etc. belongs in HISTORY period. The fact that it isn't often included says a lot more about those who are motivated by fear and ignorance than those who celebrate the holiday.

Unfortunately, it is many of the poor whites who believe they have more in common with the fat cats than any minority group. Look at the makeup of the Tea Party movement, or even the Klan. These aren't rich white guys, but working-class and the poor who are simply deluded by white supremacy.

I don't know if it helps, but every month in the Berkeley Unified School District is Black History Month. They really walk the walk, if you know what I mean.

I've heard that. And while their hearts are certainly in the right place, I just hope that the students and the teachers are getting something out of those lessons and realizing that a bunch of dead white guys weren't the only ones who helped to build and shape this country. Teaching it is one thing--getting people to stop making ignorant statements is another.

It works though, the kids know about George Washington and George Washington Carver. They get the good kind of ethnic diversity, and assume everyone else does too.

Thanks. I just wish I didn't have to say it, but I truly fear for this country. The educational system here is under sttack because those in power know it's easier to control a stupid population than a well-educated one. Personally, I think they're terrified that in some inner city school another President Obama is being shaped. I don't want a Black History anything. I just want the history of ALL Americans taught in one whole course in general.
