So yeah, I went and talked to a Navy recruiter again, and much to my suprise active military service is becoming a terrifyingly viable option. I get to ride around on boats, and learn to tapdance and wear a funny hat and karate chop terrorists, probably. The military told my dad that he was qualified to be a reporter when he signed up.

Y'see the Navy is the only branch of military that actually contractually assures you what job you get, you dont just get assigned to whatever needs to be done

Hopefully you'd be assigned to work on the USS Weatherbee after sarah's put in charge of the Pacific Fleet, she's an Admiral by now isn't she? Anyway, the travel and foriegn language bits seem right up your alley, and the being shot is mitigated to some degree by not being in the army or marines... Have you looked into the peace corps at all? I don't know much about them, I don't think they pay well... or possibly at all, and they go to shittier places than the millitary. But while you're helping villagers farm pigs tatooed with "America loves you!" on their snouts, you'll probably learn some language ( ... )
