I expect ultimately they will: play to your strengths. Their formation was online retail, they have very little experience in brick and mortar sales and it's such a small fraction of their revenue stream, it isn't really worth it.
Their purchase of Whole Foods was really nonsensical and they'll probably spin it off in a few years. Their work on cashierless stores, where you 'log in' when you walk in and sensor systems monitor everything you pick up and you just walk out with your items is interesting and innovative, but I'm not sure it scales to large stores across America. I think it's a niche tech that ultimately isn't viable.
Yeah, always seemed a poor decision to me. You go and destroy a huge swath of brick and mortar stores, then go and open brick and mortar stores? Weird. And now close brick and mortar stores.
