A shorter post this time.
There’s a line from V.I. Lenin that is so fitting: There are decades when nothing happens, and then there are weeks when decades happen.
The trenches that the Russian troops dug in near Chernobyl? It takes more radiation to kill a tree than a man. There were lots of dead trees in that area.
People in Lithuania and other Eastern European countries who speak Russian are cold-calling people inside Russia and telling them about the war in Ukraine! That’s one way to bypass electronic censorship and other forms of propaganda! The web site is callrussia.org, if you know any fluent Russian speakers.
A Facebook “bug” ‘mistakenly elevated misinformation and Russian state media for months. Yeah. How much of a bug was that? It’s well-known that Meta management lives for clicks, increased user engagement, and higher stock prices. So just how much of a bug was that and not letting programmers fix it?
It is being reported that Russian troops are looting as they withdraw from cities. There are also reports of increased atrocities.
At least two Russian soldiers are dead and 28 injured and hospitalized after being given poisoned food by Ukrainians. Talk about massive resistance! This is an unconfirmed report. Some 500 Russian soldiers have been reported suffering from alcohol poisoning around Ukraine from unknown sources, I would expect the likely culprit to be the old methyl/ethyl problem. People die from this mistake around the world on a regular basis.
Lithuania has announced that it will no longer import gas from Russia and is encouraging the rest of the EU to do likewise. THIS is how you stop Putin and remove him from office! It is sad to say and do, but Russia’s economy is going to have to be ground to dust, and it is a petro-economy. OPEC is going to have to start over-producing so that Russia cannot make any money on oil exports, and eventually Putin will be removed from office and taken to the countryside for a long rest to “take fluids”, i.e. embalming fluids.
Mass graves have been found around Kyiv after the withdrawal by Russian troops. President Biden is calling for war crime charges against Putin. It is reported that some bodies bear the marks of torture and execution.
Basically, it has been reported that the Russian army is now treating everyone in Ukraine as an enemy combatant, which is blatantly against the rules of war. This is more commonly known as genocide, systematically wiping out a people, or in this case, a country. I don't think Ukraine is going to do it, but what is the point of treating Russian POWs humanely if all of the Russian soldiers are doing this?
The Ukraine parliament has passed a bounty program to encourage Russian soldiers to defect with valuable military equipment. Got a fighter jet or naval ship? $1,000,000 could be yours. Of course, with a ship, you need to convince the rest of your crew to join you in defecting or you'll have to pull a Hunt For Red October gambit. Ukraine will also help you with new identity papers and transit to a third country.
Ukraine President Zelensky has fired two cabinet posts. From a Daily Mail article, In a speech, ...."the president accused the two generals, who worked for the national security service, of failing in their duty to protect the country. He also warned others they would be punished for similar behaviour. Zelensky said in a speech: 'Regarding antiheroes. Now, I do not have time to deal with all the traitors. But gradually they will all be punished. 'That is why the ex-chief of the Main Department of Internal Security of the Security Service of Ukraine Naumov Andriy Olehovych and the former head of the Office of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Kherson region Kryvoruchko Serhiy Oleksandrovych are no longer generals.' So no one knows exactly why they were fired, or what the consequences will be, or who their replacements will be.
