That's because HP is going to be making FURRYLOADS OF MONEY off of something that has been around for quite some time but that will change our lives -:)

It's a totally distressing read considering the wonderful things HP used to do. But about 10 yrs ago I had a short consulting assignment to a HP facility in NJ during Carly Fiorina's reign. I had NEVER seen a place where EVERYONE was TOTALLY DEMORALIZED! Most of the developers were acquired from AT&T and were the cream of the crop of Unix developers, but HP didn't allow them to develop or innovate or do ANYTHING within their demonstrated skills and track-record. The facility was only to integrate large scale server hardware & software. Only CALIFORNIA was allowed to write new software. Like the saying in 1776: never has such a precious resource so irresponsibly ruled.

Well, that settles my un-asked question. Autonomy are now definitely not on my list of places to look for a new job.

The "HP Way" left with the instruments division when it was spun off as Agilent in '99. They're apparently still a decent place to work.

I think the decline of what remained of HP is the result of Fiorina's decision that HP should out-Dell Dell by reorienting the company around retail distribution and procurement from China. Their remaining US employees are just there to spec, test, and manage the distribution of Chinese products. Now they're effectively just the Walmart of the computer industry.

I found the movie quotation mejeep August 30 2011, 06:05:35 UTC
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068156/quotes

John Dickinson: Fortunately, the people maintain a higher regard for their mother country.
Dr. Benjamin Franklin: Higher, certainly, than she feels for them. Never was such a valuable possession so stupidly and recklessly managed, than this entire continent by the British crown. Our industry discouraged, our resouces pillaged... first of all our very character stifled. We've spawned a new race here, Mr. Dikinson. Rougher, simpler; more violent, more enterprising; less refined. We're a new nationality. We require a new nation.
