I dunno - most of the Americans I've met aren't so fragile... maybe I've been mostly lucky. :) I wish more Americans would be insulted at such banal pandering.
While I may markedly disagree with them, I find all of those statements reasonably palatable except for the 'wanting to be American'.
It's not that it's wrong, it's not that it's outdated; it's just that it's so pathetically wilful in its ignorance of the changing currents of the opinions of the world.
It's ironic because if it actually works (and I prefer to believe it doesn't) then it's very scary... and if it doesn't, then it's really very insulting.

Up here, politicians who try that tactic get laughed at, for the most part. Canadians are conditioned to be quietly patriotic unless provoked.
Usually by Americans. :)
