I think the answer to this is that there are academics who do the research also. The academics tend to have tenure. They get paid their salaries no matter what, they have perfect job security, and they thrive on recognition.

If there were an easy cure, they would publish it, win the Nobel Prize for medicine. That they haven't means to me that there is no solution.

There are things about the profit stuff that are really insane...like the fact that we could wipe out malaria for almost nothing, but we put billions into producing, testing, and marketing sex drugs. THAT is a scandal.
