At the risk of being some kind of rainbow jerk, no... not a halo except in the metaphorical sense. Halos are caused by ice crystals in the sky and appear at various angles relative to the sun. What you saw was probably a glass bead bow.
I ranted about their possible use for art projects on the DDI-talk list a few weeks ago, because I had a similar experience to you -- the effect is really startling. If you're interested, sooner or later I want to try putting together a project that uses them somehow.
I remember skimming the rantings and being interested. I think I read your info. about grease and remembered reading it as having been in the wiki aritcle on halos and thus mis-posted again! Oh well. I'd love to be in on arty rainbow things, even if you are a rainbow jerk ;-)
