I was considering gettina Mac just for the experience of using a new system, but I dont know how will it will interact w/ my office applications. We sometimes have trouble w/ different versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox. So - I'd better stick to PC.
I would not sweat office stuff. The myth of M$ owning the office world is fading. Get OpenOffice and call it a day.
At the end of the day if you get in a bind, there are a variety of alternatives, but when it comes to lifestyle enhancement and cool attention to detail, Apple's sphere is a good one to be in. And besides, any time you think you're struggling for office stuff, you'll go make a presentation in Keynote and wonder why you EVER thought PowerPoint was a good reason to sit in a meeting - EVER.
Hey I have Macbook...it's worked really well for me. I do all my school papers and presentations on it...no problems with itunes. Then there's also the fact that it flew off the top of my car on the highway and only came out with minimal cosmetic damage...no internal damage. So yeah...durable.
I splurged when we got a huge check from selling our old house and got a Dell XPS 1730. It's more of a desktop replacement than a laptop, so I wouldn't recommend it if you plan on lugging it around a ton - great for my needs though.
Someone mentioned to avoid Vista. You can't really do so anymore, as it's become harder and harder to get XP since Microsoft has stopped selling it. Besides, most people who tell you Vista is no good have not actually used it. Make sure you've got 2GB of ram or more and you'll be just fine with Vista. With the service packs and decent hardware, I've had far fewer problems than I ever did with XP.
Also, if you do want to go Mac, you can run XP or Vista in a virtual machine through various methods. It would require you to purchase Windows in addition to the Mac though, so it'd add to the already inflated cost of worshiping at the temple of Apple, but it is very doable, and would almost definitely be able to run any of your works custom apps if they'll only run in Windows.
I got a quote on a HP DV9825NR Its 17 inch and only 1.83 Ghz but I get a 350 GB drive and its got 4 gig of ram and 64-bit capability so it can use all the memory.

Look for one without Vista. That's the only real requirement right now.
