Best scene is best. [grin] I'm totally handing out the series to people whom I think might need that particular kind of advice. (Though "you have to read nine books to get to the part where this makes sense" is a kind of paying attention bar in and of itself....)
I don't know why I hadn't heard of Faith Hunter already! I have also picked up and read her "Bloodmage" on the strength of how much I liked this series, and that was better than I thought it was going to be from the blurb too. Worldbuilding that includes things that are metaphysical teasers can be done poorly, but when it's a good world, it intrigues rather than annoys, heh. Have you read those as well?
I'm going to have to give the Yellowrock series another try. I picked up the first book at the library but couldn't get into it for one reason or another. I think it's worth a redo.
If you read through book two and don't like it, it's not your thing. (I had a million people tell me years ago that Anne Rice's vampire series got better as you went... I got to Queen of the Damned, the alleged best, before realizing that I just was not going to like it. Sometimes that happens.) But I'd at least go that far before giving up on it. Let me know what you think!
Just got book 1 and 2 today, and plan on diving in this weekend. I may have just not gotten hooked early enough in the first book, so I shall press forward. Someone told you Queen of the Damned was the best?? Bless their hearts. Yeah, no. I go back and forth on Anne Rice, because I loved the first two vampire books in high school, enjoyed The Witching Hour, then it all went batshit for me, so I stopped reading her.
I still found them worthwhile, but... if I were still in touch with my Cherokee ex, I'd ask him to check me on how annoying that was to an insider. (Like, is it the equivalent of "here is an Irish character who is completely inhospitable", or is it "here is an Irish character whom you never see not being drunk" levels of annoying?) I'd say give it one or two books and then see how you feel.
Hahaha, to your CPR class. I always feel like it's a good deed towards humanity to recert; it's nice to be ready. I am sure you were awesome! Hope your back feels better, too. Corsets are surprisingly great for that.
You mean John Lafitte National *Historic* Park, right?
Sometimes I note certain typos and wonder if the person was using dictation software, as that is the only way some particular miswordings would make sense.
Hahaha. My best guess was that that one came from a typo'd "Jn Lafitte", which got autocorrected and then glossed over by whatever subsequent editor. So yeah, we think similarly.
The author and I also favor different restaurants in New Orleans as the good stuff, though she does give a shout-out to Cochon. (There's not much for me there, but Mayhem loves them.)
