Derrida / Thesis Debate

I recently read Derrida's Differance, also known as The Hardest Fucking Essay in the Universe. I can't really say much about it, because it's so very beyond me. But it fucked me up for a while. I was very... I dunno, jacked in the brain. I was eating in the food-court or whatever outside subway, and I couldn't even look around the place without ( Read more... )

I would have to agree with Dub about Martinez. She is absolutely brutal when it comes to not only grading but editing, but she is extremely good at editing. Her main areas, however, are feminism and cuban lit, so I don't know how helpful that would be.

If you ever want something you write torn to shreds, though, she's the one to do it.

I have fond memories of a poem I wrote in one of McGuire's poetry classes. He responded with, in red ink, "this is so bad that I can't finish it. Redo.". It put a big smile on my face.

Update: Oswald tore the draft of my Grendel paper to shreds. Rightly so, because it was crap.
Dean tried to assure me that Jay has extremely high standards, if you ask for them. He gave me an old copy of Straylight to read Jay's review of AntiTwitter, and he's a pretty good writer.

I think what I've decided (at least until I change my mind) is I'll do the literary thesis with Oswald. There's that analysis of Code Unknown I never put together, so I'll work with Jay on that informally. Besides, I've had just as many classes with Jay as with Dean, so that's reason enough to not take him.

My fondest memory of McGuire: we bumped into each other in the parking lot. He put his hand on my shoulder and said "Daniel, you're a smart guy and a wonderful student, and I'm glad you're in my class. But you. are. a. terrible writer." I smiled and laughed. Every time a teacher praises my work, I think of that moment.
