It's been just over one year since I got laid off and went back to school. Rereading that entry, it disgusts and frightens me that I was even considering going back to work instead of school. Then there's this entry, where I wonder if I should take on the English major. I still know an English BA won't get me shit, but I don't care much; I've ( Read more... )

I don't have plenty of time. I want to do it with Oswald and she wants me to have a specific thesis idea before she agrees. Technically, Dean and Jay have each agreed to do it with me if Oswald can't/won't, but I'd rather not do it with them; they're both really smart, but I've taken a ridiculous amount of classes with both of them, and Masters programs can see that sort of thing.

I don't really have a reason not to go abroad. I just want to be done. But graduating in December isn't that different than graduating in August, I guess.

There's not a deadline, or at least not one that she's specified. But I have to adjust my idea around what her areas of expertise are, and that's mostly Old/Middle English and Gender Studies, and I have little love for any of that.

Yeah, another point of view would be nice, but also, Dean and Jay always give me high grades; Oswald gave me a low grade on a paper I wrote for her, and told me why it was so bad.

Right now I'm declared to graduate in August. If I want to apply for a Fall semester scholarship (which is due Feb 1st), I'll have to re-declare for December, before I apply. I just hope I can get the same grants I got this year.

Studying abroad has always been a goal of mine but with the wife and three furry children, it just isn't plausible. You don't have that to hold you back so I'd have to say go for it. Especially if you pair it with classes in a foreign language like spanish or something. Translators are in huge demand all over the country and the world.

I've no interest in going to a non-English-speaking country. That might be "redneck American" of me, but I feel that a language barrier would greatly detract from the cultural experience. But ho knows, if I fall in love with the Spanish language/culture this summer, I might change my mind.

But probably not.

(Thanks for the book name btw, I'm going to have to order that soon)

I was thinking about the studying abroad thing today, just wondering, what, in particular, is holding you back from doing it?

Initially, it was graduating in December instead of August. But after I thought about that for 2 minutes, I realized the job market isn't going to get any better in those 4 months, so that's a pretty stupid reason. But as you know, I just wanted to be fucking done already.

Cost is part of it. If I can't get a scholarship/grant, I don't know if I want to take a ridiculously expensive loan to basically dick around for 3 months. Even though the cost of 3 months as a student is the same as 2 weeks as a tourist if doing the same stuff. I did redeclare my graduation date for December though, and I'm in the process of applying for a scholarship (I have one letter of recommendation, and two more on the way). It's due Tuesday. So I'm at least exploring the cost thing, and how I might solve it.

There's the obvious details to figure before committing: is the campus in the boonies, what's the lodging like, is it even worth it or is it just Racine with accents? The Study Abroad Fair is on Feb 9th, so I'll look at all that then. I'm not ( ... )

Before I forget again, I was wondering what the name of that book you showed me today for your ethics class is?
I'm curious to read poorly-written nonfiction.

Why is it nonfiction? Shouldn't it be 'faction' or something?

Being Good. It's a nice little read, and the guy makes a lot of great points, but he has no flare for writing.
