I totally empathize with you. I've been in the same situation that you are in. The biggest reason I joined the Army was because I felt as though I wasn't accomplishing anything in my life and I wanted to be proud of myself. So kudos to you for recognizing that you need a change in your life :)

To answer your question: yes, I think that two people can still stay in love forever. I think that there are different levels of love [newlyweds = infatuation; middle age = love; old age = respect].. that kind of thing.

I feel bad that you feel that way because sometimes I feel like that too, and it sucks.. especially when you can't figure out quite why you feel like you do.

In regards to your question, I think it IS possible to stay in love forever and if after you've been with someone for over 20 years, the amount of times you say "I love you" seem to lessen, so it might sound surprising to hear it. I'm not sure if that's what you meant, but I tried.

love can last forever.

love is a good thing. maybe the best of things. and no good thing ever dies.

just don't let your lust confuse you and destroy your heart.

I say "I love you" to reassure the person.

"Everybody wants to hear how much, and precisely why, he or she is loved. Even when we've been chosen, even when we're tied to the knot, we still need the verbal reassurance that we are loved."

And about the whole life situation, I am still learning and still making up for lost time due to the mistakes that I have made.. but we still have many years ahead of us.. just like you said.. just make the best of it. GOOD LUCK!

This is kind of random, but where are you shipping out of? I know some people from CT who came up to Maine in order to ship out of MEPS. Are you doing that too?
