Oh, I really like this one. Late to the party, I know, but I loved the feel of it, this wonderful line you're walking between flippant and sincere which is just so on for Pete, absolutely wonderful, and the descriptions in between are beautiful and vivid. This one might be my favorite:

It’s the middle of summer, but Mikey’s like autumn; he’s everything gold and crisp and brittle and fleeting. He’s the curl of fresh air that makes the hair on the back of Pete’s neck stand up and shiver. He’s a stripe of sunlight, sharp and high-contrast.
