It was four thirty in the morning and Donghae lay awake, or rather he was kept awake. By his thoughts about a certain subject, about a certain person. That person's gaze that was so smooth, so sharp, like a blade, and he had a voice that could stop hearts, stop time itself, and could mesmerise and confuse anyone without the slightest of efforts. That person, he had the cutest lopsided smile with the most underlying intentions Donghae had ever seen, especially on someone so young. That person was a mystery, that person was amazing, that person was Cho Kyuhyun.
And he held Donghae's mind, his very heart, in an unforgiving, vice-like grip.
And Donghae was reminded again of that person after dozing off for a second when he felt the younger's warm breath against the back of his neck. He turned in the arms encircling his waist, coming face to face with the other and Kyuhyun was breathtaking, as always, even in the dark. The soft white light that streamed in through the curtains from either the moon or the street lights danced on Kyuhyun's skin, outlined his near child-like features beautifully and Donghae fell in love with him all over again.
And then Donghae remembered what had happened a few hours before Kyuhyun pulled him onto the bed and collapsed behind him, snuggling up into Donghae after exhausting himself.
Kyuhyun had been angry, again, thrashing their apartment, again, yelling out of jealousy over Donghae being far too touchy-feely with a friend, yet again. The younger cursed, throwing a vase across the room and screaming at Donghae as the glass shattered, until Donghae was sure that even Kyuhyun's lungs were raw by now.
“How many times are you going to do this?” And Kyuhyun sounded so hurt that it broke Donghae's heart. Because usually Kyuhyun was aloof about these things and he would let them slide, as silent repentance because they both know he treats Donghae unfairly - is unreasonably cruel to him at times and Donghae allows it because that was just how Kyuhyun was and if he could not accept that then how could he claim to love the younger man? But this time, it seemed as though Donghae really hurt him, cut him deep, and Kyuhyun had crossed the room and grabbed Donghae by his collar in a matter of seconds. Before Donghae could react Kyuhyun had growled at him, his scowl faltering, and kissed him in the same heartbeat.
And Donghae was even more hurt because he had expected Kyuhyun to take his anger out on him through the kiss, to bite at him or something similar, but instead Kyuhyun had just pressed their lips together and mouthed words - sorrowful, heavy words - slowly against Donghae's lips and it was then that Donghae remembered how young Kyuhyun really was, how genuinely hurt he must have been, because when Kyuhyun loved, he loved with all his heart. Donghae wrapped his arms around the younger's waist and pulled him closer, pouring his apology into the kiss because they were crying at this point and Donghae knew words would fail them.
Because words always failed them when they needed those letters that were strung together and given meaning to express to each other what they felt the most.
And thinking about it now, Donghae realizes they had just cried and kissed for those few hours, Kyuhyun chanting that he truly loved Donghae while Donghae repeated Kyuhyun's words and swore his life away that it was only Kyuhyun he loved, before they moved to the bedroom and Kyuhyun proceeded to snuggle against him and fall asleep.
Donghae felt Kyuhyun's steady heartbeat thumping softly, barely there, against his back, the younger's breath still ghosting in little puffs and leaving pleasant tingling sensations on the back of Donghae's neck and Donghae was reminded of how lucky he was, is, always will be. Because Donghae's stupid enough to take Kyuhyun's abusive streaks head on and keep loving him. Because Kyuhyun's stupid enough to deal with Donghae's fickle ways and how easily swayed he is by his emotions and keep loving him.
Because they are stupid enough to keep loving each other, even though they are the ones who have, are and always will hurt each other the most.
Because it only hurts when you care.
