My hands would crack in the winter while I was still in college: wood design was bad, ceramics was worse, and jewelry was HORRIFIC.
There's this stuff in a green jar called "Working Hands" I found at the feed store- seen it at the hardware store too, but it was a rural area so they're kind of the same thing. ^^; Anyway, put that on, go to sleep, and wake up with practically new hands.
I'll keep the beeswax thing in mind if I'm ever in that kind of scenario again... maybe that'd prevent it.
Slathering warm olive oil on the hands, covered with socks, before bed works WONDERS. When you wake up, your skin's absorbed all the nutrients and oils and has magically become soft and fluffy :D
i do it here in the winters...brutal dry winters! where's my summer heat??
oh, and even doctors use the superglue trick on stubborn cuts - especially ones on the hands or feet that are impossible to keep closed with a bandaid or gauze.

Beeswax is most excellent. Of course, vaseline works just as fine.
