Lame

Everytime I visit LJ, I go the the 'update' page and then realize how little I have to say. More often than not, I refuse to post meandering thoughts just for the sake of posting, and then get off the computer with a resolve to go do something worth posting about, and inevitably end up losing steam and reading books that were written by people who ( Read more... )

I usually post about once a week, with dry spells and occasional spurts of posting lasting a few days ( ... )

And a loaner that I finally read:

"Gun, with occasional music" by Jonathan Lethem

Good cross genre thing. Classic gumshoe in a future pharmacopia-dystopia with weird genetically humanized pets and grotesquely accelerated children. Bit odd really.

Ken- you know how i feel about this book.
very well written, filled with masturbatory moments of "see how fucking clever i am. no really do you see my brilliance, i am the lizard king god-damnit, bow down and bring me a beer, now back to the story."

Andi- i whole-heartedly endorse this author, but be prepared to roll your eyes (and if i know you like i think i know you i know which scenes will make you snicker with derision.)you might want to try "fortress of solitude".

"On Writing" is wonderful - I've owned it for years and re-read it whenever I get blocked (a circumstance that, unfortunately, occurs more and more frequently these days). I agree with you wholeheartedly about "Me Talk Pretty One Day", although it has a special place in my heart and bathroom for being both entertaining and well-constructed.

I adore Vonnegut.

Thanks for all the suggestions ;)

"And on that note, has anyone read any good books lately"

Runnin' Wild the story of clara bow - david steen

In The Hand of Dante - Nick Toches

Motherless Brooklyn - Jonathon Lethem

Our Band Could be your life - Nick Arruzzo (sp?)

Between Lovers - Eric Jerome Dickey (a.k.a cleo's imaginary author boyfriend)

Illusions - Richard Bach (a.k.a the new age book of warm fuzzies)

anything in the "McNally" series - Lawrence Sanders (the ones written by Vincent Lardo aren't as good IMHO)

Stranger in a strange land - richard Heinlin(sp?).considered a "classic" which is why it took me 12+ years to get around to it. filled with psychobabble on enlightenment, but entertaining.

If i think of anything else, i'll post again i love reccomending things to people, it makes me feel smart.

Still in the ongoing battle to finish reading The Language War by Robin Tolmach Lakoff. Very very good.

(teasing) I dunno if I can trust your advice gunn... I seem to remember you endorsing House of Leaves as well ::shudders::

Not that it wasn't a fabulous book. It was. It also still gives me the occasional nightmare, and discussing the book at any length is surefire way to get chills to flirt with my spine.

Awesome, thank you. I actually have been in the mood for fantasy lately - and I'm sick of re-reading my Tracy Weiss and Margaret Hickman collection :) I've also been meaning to pick up "I'm the One That I Want" ever since I fell in love with Margaret Cho during her stand-up routine of it. "I went through this whole thing like 'am I gay? am I straight? and finally I realized...I'm just slutty. Where's my parade? Slut pride!'"

I own "I'm the One That I Want" and "Notorious" and have rented the third (the title always eludes me) but I would definitely be interested in borrowing the audio CD.

As for Geri, I tend to avoid autobiographies on principle unless I already have a deep admiration and affection for the author... they tend to stimulate my already overactive tendencies towards self-analyzation. I will take your word on it though, and promise to give it a shot if ever I happen to come across it.
