Why do people root for a bad economy? I was reading two stories on Salon today. One was on the good job loss report. All of the comments there were all, "Yeah right. The government is just covering themselves. ADP knows what's really up." The other was on Goldman Sacks predicting a horrible forecast through 2011 and the letters there were all ( Read more... )

On one level I see this as simple one-upsmanship along the lines of "When I was your age we walked to school... uphill both ways... in the snow... barefoot..." and so on.

On another level I think some people believe the only way for the situation to turn itself around, is for it to get so bad that the desperate masses have no choice but to overthrow (probably violently) the Powers That Be, both economic and political. So perhaps they're simply spoiling for a fight.

But the most dangerous aspect of these sorts of pronouncements is the way they have of becoming self-fulfilling prophecy. After all, if no one has any money, businesses can't hire, which means people have even less money, and so on.
