Heh, it's funny you should say that (I agree), because people make fun of her voice most of the time. Though her voice on this album is very different because she had to change the way she sings because of vocal nodes, I've still seen people criticizing it and saying it's terrible. (For reference, this is what she used to sound like around the time her first album came out ... you really do get used to it after awhile). I can't tell if people bitch about it still because they can't stop thinking about her old voice, or if they are just jerks. XD
There are a lot of people who like her old voice, it's just lots of people who don't like her feel the need to express how awful it is, haha. Even in some recent ONTD posts about THIS album half the comments are "OMG IT'S THAT WOMAN WITH THE HORRIBLE VOICE OH MY EARS". XD XD XD whatever.
I think I would recommend her second album "Ys". That's the first one I heard. Her voice is sort of halfway between the old voice and the one she has now -- still kind of weird but a little more controlled. Plus it's an amazing album ... only five songs but they range from 6 minutes to 16 minutes long. :P I would recommend the latest one (Have One On Me) but it's three discs long and is a lot to handle (I still haven't listened to the third disc myself).
I'd heard of her but not listened to anything by her yet. I see nothing wrong with her voice. I really like the harp, it's always great to see instruments people tend to think of being used for an orchestra out and about in other places.
Unrelated, they put the covers for season 2's Japanese release on The Velvet Onion today and I thought of you.
People get really touchy about some voices, it seems. Either that or they just don't want to give them her chance. I've read all kinds of epithets thrown around about her voice, "a dying cat", etc.
Yeah, I love unusual instruments being used in pop/rock music too. I have a big thing for the cello obviously :D and I also love the accordian. Joanna totally conquers that harp and makes it do her bidding. I saw her live two years ago and it's wonderful to watch her as well as listen to her.
Boosh Japan: I saw that and I was so excited!!! Apparently it is airing on FujiTV, which made me happy ... I really hope they get some Japanese fans. :D I tried to babelfish the FujiTV webpages but for some reason they didn't come out right. :/ Babelfail, moreso than usual, I mean.

Here's one of her songs from "Ys":
