snow turned ash
snow turns the world white
erasing the complexities of modern living
and memories tickle our minds
as our childhood stares back at us
through the smoky lenses of a fireplace
burning as we roast marshmallows
to keep out the cold
to keep out the loneliness
and apartment complexes soar above us
the mighty lords of industry and smoke
that throw ash on as snow and gray
making mud with tears never fallen
because real men don't
and no one is a boy
no one can cry
cars drive by like a fierce river
that roars angry under our feet
and oil chokes the streets
while kids roam their rooms
to keep from the scorching heat
of exhaust that burns the lungs
that burns our life away
