winter night
in the midst of this cold wind
that shears our clothes and bones
the sun sparkles diamonds on the snow
and its fires burn like ice
in our shivering bodies
and each step crackles
as we walk back to your place
to pour some alcohol and watch the stars
imitate the glitter of a snowy night
as the sun fades to the background
before disappearing altogether
we turn off the lights
to let the darkness be a thick blanket
as we strip down to our bare preconceptions
and stand naked without seeing anything
but the stars' reptile eyes patient and slow
ancient and unforgiving
as we stare out the windows
trying to find the pattern in the darkness
our minds snap in the brittle air
and the darkness in our eyes stares back
taking everything leaving nothing
