A little red bird

A bird landed once
on the sill of my eyelids
and peered through those shimmering windows.
I was caught breathless by the sudden inspection;
few had dared to land so close before.

The bird ruffled her red feathers
and sang away all those fears of dark things,
like monsters harrying sleep just on the edge
of my imagination, fierce and cold.
She watched my tears licking down my cheeks.

Morning was growing older,
and the daylight things began to move;
their groggy paths brushed past without a glance
at my gawky limbs, spread out like a withered oak,
while the little bird danced between them.

She whispered in the quiet voice of small things
that I was hers and she was mine,
even though snow hung in the air and she soon would leave.
The bird flitted to the sills of my eyes,
her red feathers like fire on my blue face.

I was tempted to wrap my hands around her,
so I could always feel her rapid heart near my glacial pulse
and keep away the dark claws that skulk in lonely shadows.
She had promised to return as the snow wandered away,
her wings beating through the gray clouds
while I hung there, my hands suspended and waiting.

for those of you who even knew I was dating Luciana, I'm not anymore. Things ended Thursday night, but not on a bad note, so don't feel bad for me.
