I heard one pundit warn that the Republicans could make the same mistake that the Tories did when they lost power in Britain. The right wing of the party will convince their party that the reason they lost was because they had gone with a softer, middle ground leader, so their answer will be a big lurch to the right.
Something a bit like that happened to the Victorian Liberal Party after Kennett lost. They blamed everything on "The Kennett Factor". But instead of lurching, they just sat on their hands waiting for power to be handed back to them. They are still just patiently waiting...

This sort of problem is very common, usually it's just the ideologues in safe seats that are left after a big landslide victory and they insist on the policies that usually are the least popular. The post Keating labour crowd pushed the self righteous elitist PC policies and ignored the "protect the workers" side of things, it's only when Howard actually became worse than Keating's anti union position that he got the boot.
