Of Unexpected Things That Homework Teaches

Jun 12, 2011 23:56

Summary: Wally has a homework assignment. He learns something, though he doesn't think it's what his teacher had in mind.
Pairing:Kaldur/Wally

It's an English assignment which means Wally automatically hates it. An essay on someone he admires, and no he can't write about the Flash. He could technically do regular old Uncle Barry, because he does admire his outside of the suit, but he can also be really boring and this whole assignment is bad enough as it is.

So Wally starts making list of people he admires and thing he admires about them.

I doesn't take him that long to figure out that Kaldur's list is the longest.

GOOD LEADER

Wally might have complained a bit when they were first getting things figured out but Kaldur does a pretty awesome job as the team's leader. It's not even that he gives good directions or that he's a good tactician, even though he does and he is. It's that at their worst Kaldur can still get them to work together as a team. He finds the raw edges of them that don't really fit together and he slides in and fills the space, soothes hot tempers down with a few words and steps back to watch them cool down. Rinse and repeat until the edges wear themselves down. Mold themselves into familiar patterns that snap together like jigsaw pieces under pressure.

And Wally admires that because any of them, with some training and a little practice, could lead the team on missions. Each of them has had a chance to be the one coming up with plans and leading attacks. Kaldur manages to do one better though and lead in something they have more trouble with.

He leads them in how to be a team.

CARING

STRONG

WELL SPOKEN

Wally talks. Like, a lot. He is often made aware of the fact that he talks way too much.

Listening to Kaldur Wally sort of gets the impression that it’s more a thing of quality rather than quantity thing. Because when Wally talks it’s just whatever noise happens to float to the top of his head first but when Kaldur talks it’s, well, it’s something you want to listen to. Something you want to hear. Kaldur talks in a way that makes people listen.

Wally thinks he could listen to him talk all day, even about something stupid like magic. Hell, considering that Wally holds Kaldur’s speeches responsible for both helping to ensure the formation of their team and breaking through to Supey indirectly saving their lives? Wally wouldn’t even be all that surprised if he could make Wally consider the distinctly improbable idea that some magic might be real.

It probably doesn’t hurt that he has a nice voice.

CONSIDERATE

FUNNY

There is probably some sort of irony in how bone dry Kaldur’s humor tends to be. Wally’s usually too busy holding his stomach from laughing so hard to really pay much more attention to it than that.

CONFIDENT

COLLECTED

GRACEFUL

Kaldur is sure footed on land and sea. There is a precision to his movements that makes every move seem inevitable, as sure as gravity. It’s like life has a choreographer and Kaldur is the only one who bothered to learn the routine.

Sometimes Wally gets a little distracted by the way he moves.

Obviously this is just envy, sense Wally still runs into walls and all.

HONORABLE

DEPENDABLE

PATIENT

Patience is a virtue. It's something Wally's heard most of his life, sometimes in a "and one you don't have" kind of way and sometimes in a "dear lord, grant me some" kind of way.

Kaldur goes around being patient more like it's a way of life. And maybe it is, some zen Atlantian religion or something. All Wally really knows is that when other people have given up on something, on...on someone like him with the attention span of a hyper hummingbird, Kaldur just waits. Waits for him to come back to conversations that he forgot he was having. Waits for him to expel his energy. Waits for him like Wally is the one who needs to catch up and he's perfectly okay with it.

It's kind of nice.

LOYAL

COURAGEOUS

STRONG

...He's said that one already hasn't he?

Still, Atlantean, there's a lot of strength there, it could bare repeating. Right? And even if he wasn't Atlantean it's not hard to tell that he would still be pretty strong. He's got a broad chest and mucled arms and he has that whole swimmers body thing too, powerful legs and a defined V etching out the bottom of his abs and....

...

...

Also you know, strength of character. He has that one too.

DILIGENT

STEADFAST

MATURE

Kaldur is probably the most mature guy that Wally knows. He's so mature he can be mature even when he's not being mature. It's, once again, really useful for the team but also incredibly useful when pulling pranks. Wally can really get behind anything that helps with pranks.

If it weren't for Uncle Barry and how immature he can be at times Wally might say it's just because he's older. He's already past the more awkward stages of growing up, what with the voice cracking and oddly proportioned limbs. Hell, you can tell that much just by looking at him. He's all filled out and leanly muscled, except, you know, with enough of them to give him some actual bulk. The guy could lift Wally like there was no problem and he's big enough that he can and has shielded Wally with his own body and Wally can attest from that alone that Kaldur is very ma...ture....

...Ehem...

Right. Wally's beginning to think this isn't the kind of admiring his teacher had in mind either.
