my first interpretation was that it was his mom holding his hand showing off the new ring she got, and he (as a mustached kid) assumed that making the circle with his hand to hold hers represented the ring... obviously that's not it, but I'm having trouble coming up with a better explanation.

Unless it's a threesome, as alluded to above, but then why is he acting like his fingers in an empty circle is the heirloom?

Anybody? I don't get it either. She's showing the wrong hand for it to have anything to do with a wedding ring.
