Still no forgiving Sherlock, is there? The fact that Moriarty could do this means the potential was always there, that, in a way, John wasn't the perfect person for Sherlock that he thought he was. Which really, just made him the perfect person, but it would be hard to see that when, for all rights and purposes, Sherlock left him for who Moriarty made the perfect person.

Is it wrong that I like to think of Sherlock in that apartment, alone? That gives me great pleasure.

On the contrary, I find pleasure (after this) in picturing him there alone, too, so it seems precisely right to me! Thanks for the comment! Definitely no forgiving him, and you're so right -- John isn't the perfection Sherlock's pictured, but I think he still is the best match (and Sherlock would eventually realize, wouldn't he?).

Thank you for not letting Sherlock off the hook. He did it to himself, even if Moriarty set up the perfect temptation. Free Will can be a nasty gift. Moriarty will always have this victory over Sherlock. Sherlock will always know it.

He tried to compartmentalize his relationship with John to keep it safe without considering talking to John or giving him a choice in the matter. Rationalizing that that's what John really wants. Arrogant. I've seen that blow apart many relationships in real life. Well done, again.

I don't think there's any letting off the hook for cheating, or I hope there's not. Forgiveness, eventually, sure, but... the man did it.

Thanks for the comment!

"Arrogant. I've seen that blow apart many relationships in real life."

Absolutely. Hubris.

And it almost always stems from insecurity. He thought she wanted him, liked him, as a normal man.

Juvenile, callow behavior from an adult.

Like the straight A geek w/a loving geekgirl, cheating w/the head cheerleader just because, well, someone like her would, should never want him.

It's way too flattering, ego-fulfilling to pass up.

Oh god, oh god. after reading the first one i promised myseldf - no more. i can't. but i did. and it broke me all over again. Sherlock, you're a dick.

(brilliant story. I don't often think of sherlock as a negative character, even when he's being an arse. but here,i hate him. i do. i really do.)

Yes, I think I need to read and write something tremendously fluffy after all of this, myself! :) Thanks for the comment and sorry for all the sad and angst!

I somehow find myself able to actually FORGIVE Sherlock after reading this (and the Mycroft-POV piece, where it's obvious Sherlock's growing up). I think it's that growing up that does it for me. Knowing that he learned the hard way, that he has LEARNED something. Hopefully he'll let John know someday just what happened; I think John can appreciate Sherlock learning, even if it was Moriarty's lesson and it hurt John. John always has wanted Sherlock to be a little bit better a man, and I have faith that now he will be.

(surprisingly)I very much appreciate this human side of Sherlock, the possibility of him to make a mistake.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go back and re-read that part with the ring & feelings.
It's time for my heartache soothers :D
