Very Vienna 2013: Architecture and streetscapes

Aug 21, 2013 23:44

Coffee houses everywhere! This is along the Gürtel, which I though meant "girdle" although I see it's usually translated as "belt." It's the outer ring road that marks the transition from the city of Vienna to the suburbs (although, visually, there is no difference).

Perhaps the ultimate version of a Viennese tourism photo. The horse carriages are called fiakers. The stables are in the suburbs (outside the Gürtel, the outer ring road) and in the morning they all go clopping down Alser Strasse towards the Innere Stadt. Background is Burgtheater and Volksgarten (I think).

Nothing could be more Viennese then a sidewalk café on the grand scale.

Unless it's a sidewalk cafe on a more modest scale, on modular platforms scaled to fit in parking spaces. We need these in NYC!

I had a slight obsession with shooting this type of streetscape, as you will see. I think that's AKH  (the hospital where my mom was treated) in the background.

Vienna has fantastic roofscapes, as good or better than Paris.

I basically loved the street façades. I should have taken more.

Although, Vienna has something of a street art problem. "ALK" probably refers to a political issue.

Also typically Viennese: window boxes!

And roof gardens.

I spent a few evening in the café on the left. Good free wifi and ambiance, not so good food.

Leaving the University of Vienna Alte AKH campus.

Just outside the Gürtel (totally indistinguishable from inside the Gürtel). Although the supermarket a few doors down was larger and cheaper.

I think this is just outside the University.

Another street outside the University.

Votivkirche seen from just outside University campus (about 10 minutes from the Ring).

A not particularly famous church along Alser Strasse. I mainly took this so I could remember where I was.

Leading off the Alser Strasse near the Ring.

Another fine example of Viennese street art.

U-bahn stop near my hotel. Vienna, like Paris, goes for the Art Nouveau in terms of transportation signage.

Votivkirche. It's a landmark, just outside the Ring, about 20 minutes walk from the hospital.

Mostly taken in the 9th district, where I stayed. AKH (hospital) is in 10th district.

2013, vienna
