"The service we render to others is really the rent we pay for our room
on this earth. It is obvious that man is himself a traveler; that the
purpose of this world is not 'to have and to hold' but 'to give and
serve."

Sir Wilfred T. Grinfell

what doesit mean to 'have and to hold" - to hold the world in your palm?

to live to serve? what?

It means that we shouldn't try to HAVE things - such as possessions or whatnot and HOLD them, meaning become obsessed with them or think they are the only things worth living for. We should GIVE more, our time, energy, love, patience, things that count and SERVE more, other people, a Higher Power, for the good of people.
Make more sense?

that sounds good. i agree with that. some people in our society are a bit consumeristic... all about clothes and fashion... how does that add to their life? quality??
i don't think it does. some are more materialistic.
