Salticus scenicus

Apr 14, 2007 18:59

Haven't written in ages - much work and well... Just not been feeling very connected I suppose.

I got add-on macro lenses via the magic of eBay, and went out spider hunting today. Sunshine + bricks = salticus scenicus!

cut for those who wish to avoid spiders )

He looks furry and cute like a tarantula :) This is just the start of my tiny things made big crusade! Salticids do conveniently freeze when you get close though, which helps, so there will be more of them.

The additional lenses cost about $20 I think? Get some! I bet you have cooler spiders out there. That guy is about 1/4 of an inch long! Make tiny things big!

the jpegs are not so much vivid as contrasty. because they have less information, they cant hold as wide a colour scope as the raw ones there for you tend to find that the colours "group" togther causing more contrast between the groups of colours rather than the actual detail.
that make any sense?
What are you using to process the raw files?

That does make sense, yes - thanks! (I know the comp sci background of raw vs jpegs, but wouldn't have thought about the practical results of that in that way - lower dynamic range leading to more contrast seems obvious now!) That should mean in theory, since I end up with a jpeg, that I can process the raw to get exactly the same jpeg as I would have got not shooting in raw? (my camera isn't fancy enough to store jpeg and raw simultaneously, I have to choose ( ... )

hahah pro-photo guru...
No I haven't used that program or any linux based programs but it does sound a lot like the photoshop raw. Obviously tweaking the histogram will give you the same effects as slidy bars but they can be a little tempremental. If it gives you the options of contrast and saturation they will probably give you more of the colours that you're looking for but if not try stretching the histogram to the right. its all about playing around with it. If I knew what your program was like I might have a better idea but you sound like you've got the knack of it anyway :)

That is good proof that it is only sensible to be scared of spiders! It looks evil!

Ta! I will hopefully get even better shots if I can find one on the top of something, not the side :)
