jinxed it

Mabel (our '98 Ford Contour) has been slightly tempermental of late, occasionally refusing to go into gear without repeated double-clutching and much cajoling. Monday evening, as Fred drove her back from MA, she decided to take it to the next level -- she now refuses to go into any gear at all. Thankfully, Fred made it home (albeit the last mile ( Read more... )

Please remind me of how far you live from downtown Boston. More than 90 minutes? Less?

My car is currently at the Boskone hotel. It's going to be parked at Alewife until Sunday afternoon/evening. If you're not a ridiculous distance away, I could hypothetically drive it to you, have you bring me back to Boskone, then you could use my car until Sunday evening when we'd have to do the return shuttle/shuffle.

If this would be helpful, you can send me email to the address shown in my LJ profile or call me at 612-964-3558. I'm going to be unavailable by phone for 30-60 minutes starting at 9pm tonight, but will be picking up email then.

You're a peach! That's a tremendously generous offer, and I wish we could take you up on it -- but it currently looks like we'll be spending the weekend on Mission: New (to us) Car. :-(

If by some miracle we actually have replacement wheels by then, we might try for Sunday, but it's all very up-in-the-ether at present.

(For future reference, though, we're only about an hour from Boston, up in Dover, NH.)

I hope your car search goes well! And if it works so splendidly that you're able to head down to Boskone on Sunday, all the better!

Urk, that sounds bad. Do you only have the one vehicle between you? We spent the summer with only one car and it suuuuuuucked. I would have to drop off both kids at their respective places, then drive 60+ miles to get to work and repeat in the reverse direction in time to get the kids by the end of the day. We were able to borrow cars for just about three weeks of that time and my mom came down to help for a handful of days but oooph. You have my deepest sympathies. Fingers crossed!

Yup, just the one set of wheels -- we sold the second car about a year and a half ago, when it was obvious that it wasn't going to pass its next annual inspection, and Fred was going through chemo (and hence not driving anywhere, anyway).

I'm fortunate that one co-worker is currently renting a house about a mile away from us, and generously has been giving me a ride to/from work -- but we have GOT to get replacement wheels pronto. Normally, I feel all warm and cosy once I'm home for the evening, but without wheels to go anywhere, I suddenly feel amazingly claustrophobic.
