The CHARACTER
BASICS
Name: Svadilfari Gwyn Volundr
Gender & Played-By: Male / Charlie Cox
Age & Birthday: 17 / February 14th (stop laughing.)
Nationality: Norse with a sprinkling of Welsh.
Sexuality: Queer as a $3 bill. (Good luck getting this to ever matter, though)
Physical Description: Tall and thin, more of a fencer's build. Truth be told when you account for height differences, even Tanwen has more muscle than him. He tends to walk eyes downcast, though he does not fidget. He dresses plainly, robes tend to be threadbare and worn. Has a habit of bloodstains on his collar (his own). He usually looks pale due to the touch of anemia.
FAMILY DETAILS
Parent/s: David (father, Polnoch Alumni), Bethan (Mother, attended Hogwarts - Hufflepuff Alumni). The Volundr family was one of the tragic cases of "Pureblooded but poor". This didn't make them friendly or accepting, however, if anything they are closest to survivalists in nature. They tend to want nothing to do with society except David understands the need for school, especially as him Bethan are usually absent finding work, leaving Agni to raise most of his siblings. There should be no questions as to why they turned out like they did.
Siblings: Two elder brothers, one little sister, one little brother.
Agni (22, Male, Polnoch Alumni) - Possibly a sociopath, the one in charge of taking care of his siblings while their parents were finding work. Tanwen was his favorite sibling. Has and will murder for his family. Very much the 'alpha' in that pack unit.
Sveinn (20, Male, Polnoch Alumni) - The brains of the operation. Clever and ruthless, tends to be the one to clean up Agni's messes. Hates everyone ever
Tanwen (16, Female, Polnoch) [
argent_blaze] - Agni's favorite. A small, female version of him at times, aside from the fact that she ocassionally shows signs of remorse.
Fenrir (14, Male, Polnoch) - Could get away with murder. Blithely charming and charismatic. Utter card shark. Skilled pickpocket. Suffered from vitiligo when he was younger, and while his parents were able to get treatment to him before any detrimental effects set in, his skin has remained the patchwork two-tone.
Extended Family: N/A - the Volundr bloodline has pretty much dwindled down to just this family. Yes the anemia is from inbreeding somewhere along the line.
SCHOOL-CENTRIC
Year: 7th
Path/House: Morgen
Major: Care of Magical Creatures
Quidditch: De Nadda - he doesn't even care to watch games.
Pet: Pets and his family do not get along, but he does have a natural affinity for animals so he tends to pick up wildlife here and there.
Wand: Rowan, 12 inches, sturdy, unicorn hair core.
Patronus: A noble-looking wolf as tall as he is at the shoulder.
Boggart: Agni in a poor mood (like all of his siblings).
Erised: Being surrounded by family and friends who all tell him how proud they are of him.
PERSONALITY
Favorites: He has a fondness for all things with four feet and fur, anything with feathers, scales... Svadilfari likes animals better than people. They're nicer. He likes working with his hands as well. Building things, cooking, cleaning, anything that keeps him moving but doesn't involve violence. He likes contributing and being a helper, in any way he can.
Distastes: Most people. He's caring and gentle, but he's also a bit of a misanthrope. He doesn't care for bullying - he's had enough of that for one lifetime, and while HE'S learned to put up with it he does intervene when others try. This usually means HE'S the new target, but so be it. Svadilfari also has a distaste for gossip as he sees it as another kind of bullying, and lies.
Secrets, Strengths, & Weaknesses: Though it does not show as often in him as in his siblings, he has his family's talent for wandless magic when (if) his infinite patience runs out. Like them it is still uncontrollable if that happens. Unlike the rest of his family he has a natural affinity for animals and the magic more on the physical side - potions, herbology, things that require you to get down and dirty. While his sexuality isn't something that's known, that's less him being closeted and more him deciding that relationships with people just aren't for him, so he has remained celibate. He doesn't particularly care if people find out he beats off thinking about men rather than women - what's one more thing to be picked on about?
Detailed Personality: For all they've done to him and for all they've treated him like something to be ashamed of for not being a fan of wanton violence, Svadilfari carries the same unyielding loyalty to his family. Blood is blood and he loves them, even if he doesn't like them. Especially if he doesn't like them - the more he dislikes something the more Svadilfari will force himself to do it if he deems it necessary. He's developed something of a martyr complex and emotional masochistic streak.
He runs towards the 'strong, silent type' archetype, often silently observing the world alone. Part of the social groups, but always on the fringes, never quite fitting in. His family's reputation precedes him, even though they don't acknowledge him outside of saving him from bullies, he's still a Volundr and thus, by reputation, a wild and dangerous animal just waiting to explode. After seven years of failing to make friends he's mostly given up on the social thing and focused his energy and near infinate patience on his studies. Should anyone ever be brave enough to approach him first, there is little that Svadilfari will not do for them. Quite honestly it's probably best that he has the reputation of his siblings keeping most people at bay. His desperate desire to be acknowledged and relatively few other social ties make him an easy target to be taken advantage of.
He prefers animals to people because he finds them to be nicer and more honest. He hates lying, though he'll rarely do more than ask for the truth if he catches someone in a lie. In the end, Svadilfari is a kind person who has been very wounded many times, which has warped his idealism and hopefulness.
HISTORY
Character History: Svadilfari is the middle child of five to the exceptionally pure-blooded and exceptionally poor Volundr line. And at this point it is a line, rather than a tree. As the middle child he was effectively the first of them to be raised more by Agni than by their parents. What set him and Tanwen apart is still unknown as far as what Agni decided was better about Tanwen. Though only ten months apart from eachother, the two are as different as night and day. It seemed like whatever Svadilfari did, it was never good enough. He just didn't have the love for violence that his siblings had - he didn't even have the stomach for it, crying at the smallest things until they beat the habit out of him to keep others from using it against him. They did their best to take care of him, but Agni was not capable of really knowing or being able to do what was best for another - and Sveinn was not capable of contradicting Agni or telling him 'no'. When Tanwen became more and more like the savage archetype that they had created for themselves, they were even harder on Svadilfari to become the same. The more they pushed, the harder he stood his ground trying to maintain his sense of self and the family relationship. By the time he was admitted to Durmstrang, something had to give.
It was Svadilfari that broke, going as far from his brothers as possible, seeking to minimize his contact with them. If he couldn't do good by them, he just wouldn't be around them. It was confusing for the child - bullied and harassed one minute from people who saw him as an easy target to get back at Agni and Sveinn, only to be saved by those selfsame brothers the next minute and hurt even worse by them for letting himself be backed into a corner that way. As he withdrew from family, so too did he withdraw from most other students, drawing his attention inward and turning to the animals and plants that didn't have words that hurt as much as broken bones.
Come his seventh year he has a reputation as a loner. As hard as it can sometimes be, he delights in school, and has for the last four years stayed there during every holiday that he can, frozen winters be dammed.
SAMPLES
First-Person: The whomping willows seem to be flourishing this year despite the weather. The grove by home have more and more branches missing every day as they have at eachother. They should really grow farther apart, even if it DOES mean I get quite a bit of their leaves without having to get within beating range, myself.
Went into town today for the first time since I came home. There were muggles in uniforms I've never seen before wandering about. Heard some listening to a radio. A man was talking about standing against Germany alone if he had to. Or maybe he was talking about his country, I don't know. It pissed of the ones in uniform, though, and I decided to head home.
School should be starting soon. I feel excited.
Third-Person: The hall where they took their meals always seemed deafening to Svadilfari. The acoustics were unbelievable, he wondered how anyone could carry on a conversation when it seemed to just swallow the sound.
Herbology textbook shoved under his arm, Svadilfari was pleased to find that he was to the hall early enough that he could find an unoccupied section of table. Everyone else was busy doing meet-and-greets again. Well... he had none of that to worry about.
Nose planted firmly in his book, he tuned out everything as the other students filed in, chatting eachother up and speculating on what the new year would bring what with recent developments in wizarding politics. Svadilfari's ears colored lightly as he strained to hear - he was sorely lacking in any knowledge of it. His mother and father wanted nothing to do with the ministry or anyone that even sought to oppose them, which meant that he was grossly unprepared when it came to the matters of current events. Curious to see if his siblings were also attempting to figure out what had happened over summer, he glanced up from his book just in time to see Tanwen and Fenrir harassing the first-years and having a good laugh about it. His eyes narrowed without thinking about it, just in time for them to take notice of him.
After seven years of this, it didn't even sting when they just laughed harder and went back to what they were doing.
Svadilfari bit the inside of his lip and brought his book back up. It really WAS interesting... and served as good cover as he stuffed a bit of dinner into his bag to take with him out tonight. Last year he had discovered a nest of wild Snidgets, and had only dawdled long enough before coming to the hall to make sure that they had survived the summer. He spent what time he could during the hotter months researching on whatever he could find about them. It was easy enough - his brothers thought he may have been finally getting into Quidditch. They didn't need to know that the thoughts that were filling his head were not of victories in competitive sports, but aiding in bringing a whole species back from the verge of extinction.
