She was okay.
She was okay through the accident, through the screech, squeal of tires. Conan’s limp body flying through the air to land in a crumpled pile on the road. Sonoko’s frantic scream. The horror that engulfed her for precious seconds until she forced herself to move, running out into the road.
She was okay during the ambulance ride, gaze never straying from his face, bereft of glasses. Okay as they wheeled him on a gurney to emergency, doctors rapping out quick, professional orders to busy nurses around them. She was okay as she was stopped from going any further and had to watch Conan being wheeled out of her sight, away from her and into surgery.
She was okay.
She wa… No. No, she wasn’t.
Ran sobbed, a choked sound that caught in her throat and tore at her insides, made her feel like everything was falling apart. She barely noticed Sonoko’s steady arm around her side, guiding her to sit down and, when her tears kept coming, pulling her into a tight hug, and letting her cry herself out.
It was so unfair… Her brave, smart, brilliant detective boy… so much like Shinichi. It seemed so unfair that in all the horrible cases he'd been through, in everything he’d seen and done, that a stupid car-accident should be the cause of his most serious injury yet.
She sobbed harder into Sonoko’s shoulder.
Be okay, Conan-kun.
