Dude, while it may be true that you could've prevented it by saying "no" and then punching them in the throat (maybe frowned upon, slightly), that's still just information for you, for next time. They were still horribly wrong to put you in such a place, knowing that you would have to put yourself in a very uncomfortable situation to refuse and that you probably did not have the information to do so.
Even if you could speak the language and knew everyone very well, it's not at all reasonable to inform someone they're hosting an event ten minutes before it starts. (And not to mention the fact before you volun-tell them to do it!)
