Huh. That's an interesting teaching method. We always had the print and cursive alphabet all around the room on these long banners, and the teacher would just start us off at A and have us practice both in this paper with a wide space between lines, and a dotted line between *those* lines to help us make letters tall enough and such.
I always hated some cursive because things like capital Q and F looked so stupid. When I write by hand now, my handwriting is a mix of print of cursive. It's gotten a bit less legible as time has gone on/I've spent more time typing than writing. Plus my arthritis/carpal tunnel makes writing for long periods pretty uncomfortable.
I don't know. I think they mostly do. I have a friend a couple of years younger than me who always writes in block capitals, but my nieces write joined up.
Yes, like you I did the dread writing practice. But a lot of my uni friends were really writing in block letters - some struggled with exams because it takes so much longer forming individual letters rather than my scrawl. We're starting to see (large percentages of) students who can't read handwriting at all, which is tricky for the future of archives...
I used to have very nice handwriting that could be very clearly read. After all these years of primarily writing on the computer my handwriting has become more of a scrawl and I can't write for more than 15 minutes or so without having to really massage my hand. It's embarrassing.
I admire people who can compose what they want to say (other than small comments like this) directly on a keyboard. I still need to have a pencil (not a pen) in my fist.
