I have a few minutes, so I've decided to post yesterday's and today's September meme questions.

3. What part of primary school would you like to incorporate into your adult life? The tiny chairs? The rote recitation of the times tables? The sitting cross legged on the floor of the hall for assembly surrounded by the unpleasant smell of wood polish ( Read more... )

Don't knock rote recitation of tables -- it still comes in handy! (Though I suppose it would be quicker if I could just recall the relevant line).

I would incorporate the shop! We had a little shop, with jars of dried beans and pasta, old-fashioned scales with brass weights, and paper bags. I remember the time my friend weighed out some macaroni, tipped it into a paper bag, and then, holding the bag by the top corners, flipped it over to close it, the way shop keepers always used to -- do you remember that? -- and the macaroni spilled out all over the floor. She was doing really well up to that point ;-)

I would also incorporate the measuring jugs we used to measure gills and pints and quarts of water with.

It was always a good day when it was your turn to play with the shop or the water!

*g* It was the rote element I don't miss. But yes, I do have to admit, as a learning method it worked.

*laughs* Yes, I remember sop keepers doing that.

Interestingly, I don't remember play being any part of 'proper school'. I did go to nursery school before that and that was all play, really. More of a mums' organised childcare set up than anything else. But once I got to the little village school? No, I only really remember reading and writing and arithmetic (although I do remember story time; that was nice.)

I've been thinking about the primary school question and couldn't think of anything I would want to incorporate into everyday life -until I remembered the goat! I went to infant school on an army base - The Royal Welch Fusiliers - and the regimental goat used to meander into the school quite often :)

Oh yes, you would have to incorporate the goat.

In kindergarten and first grade here (5-7yrs), we had these big, metal barrels that someone had lined with carpet and cut holes in, and lined the edges with a rubber gasket kind of thing. You could crawl in there and sit and read, and the carpet and walls made it quiet and comfy and nice.

I think that should be a part of everyday adult life. :D

I would eliminate COOKING. I don't do it *every* day, but i do it most days (trying to eat healthy). I hate it. If i had the money, i would hire someone to cook for me and stock my freezer and 'fridge with pre-made meals that just needed heating or popping into the oven.

Hiding in a barrel to read is definitely a good thing. Yes, I would incorporate that into adult life, too.

Oh, imagine life on less sleep. I don't mind sleeping per se, but needing about 8 hours seems disproportionate!

Three or four would be fine, I think. But it would have to just be only you and me. If everybody did it, 'They' would insist on us working those extra waking hours.

Oh goodness, tiny chairs - also chairs attached to desks - always so confusing. I'd instigate nap time for sure. *g*

*g* I went into an Infant 1 classroom once, as an adult, and had one of those "Was I really ever that small?" moments.
