September Meme, Days 20 to 25

Sep 25, 2020 10:08

I've been off line for the last week. This month has been odd, with periods of busy and periods of quiet. So, much catching up to do on the meme. Behind a cut again, to save your flists.

20. What’s your favourite kind of bread?

Definitely crusty white bread! I know you're supposed to be into whole grain, or sour dough, or whatever, these days. And those are nice too. But as a favourite at any time, fresh crusty white. Mmmm...

21. What’s a big pet peeve you have?

I'm a bit of a language pedant. I have to regularly remind myself that language is a living thing and my old habits are not rules set in stone that it is wrong to change. So although I mourn the gradual loss of the word 'who' in sentences (as in 'The women who ran the country declared that that the misuse of the word 'disinterested' should be outlawed')
It seems that 'that' has replaced 'who' almost universally now. Also, the use of disinterested to mean uninterested has robbed the language of a wonderful word that almost, but not quite, meant 'altruistic'.
Ah well, language evolves. Say it often and loud and celebrate the fact *g*

22. Do you have an inanimate object that you have given a name?

Oh yes. All my transport machines have names - my car and my bicycles. I don't anthropomorphise them. They don't have a sex or a gender, but they do have names.

23. What’s your favourite Elton John song, and why?

I haven't got one. Why would I? In my experience his music can be an amiable and inoffensive background, but I wouldn't go searching it out.

24. If you could choose any animal as a pet (all problems aside), which one would you have and why?

I don't want a pet. They tie you down too much. Even cats require to be fed. Dogs require more. I know the question says 'all problems aside', but those are not problems; they're facts of existence.

25. What’s something “everyone” knows how to do that you’ve never actually done?

A year ago I would have said "knitting", but I am teaching myself now (slowly, inexpertly and with frequent dropped stitches) and making squares. Nothing more ambitious, but it is knitting. I suppose I could say crochet, but I'm not sure there are that many people who do that.
*shrugs* On second thoughts, given my level of skill, I think I can still say that knitting is something everyone can do and I can't.

The rest of the month's questions can be found under the cut on day 1's post.
