Kyuhyun likes photographs. He likes looking at them and taking them, too. He likes photographs of people more than anything, because he likes to see how their faces are laid bare. He knows that no amount of acting skill can deny the truth from a camera, and so Kyuhyun uses it to gauge people's feelings: he prefers watching people rather than asking them things - people can lie (how many times has Eeteuk said "I'm fine"?), but body language never does.
He also likes photographs because it lets him remember. Fun times, sometimes even bad times. It makes him remember not to forget.
(He looks at the photo taken on Zhoumi's twenty-second birthday, Super Junior - M in China, a small surprise party with big hugs and even bigger smiles. Kyuhyun remembers that day, but looking at the six familiar faces - the seventh one his own - and he remembers the day the year before: Kyuhyun remembers the crash, the splitsecond of pain before blacking out. He remembers being broken but wanting to live. Kyuhyun remembers that he fought to stay alive, and he remembers to be always thankful for his second chance.
And every year, Kyuhyun will remember to celebrate Zhoumi's birthday, because it now feels like it is also his own.)
Kyuhyun likes being on radio shows not just because it is fun to be, but because he gets to play around with the cameras: those on the set, and those of his hyungdeul. He borrows Yesung's phone when he comes on Miracle For You, tugs Yesung's sleeve to pull him into the frame, clicks to capture the moment. Later, Kyuhyun bugs Yesung for an upload, because Kyuhyun thinks it is nice enough a shot to update his Cyworld with. The next few days he'll find his face all over the Internet, fan-taken shots and screencaps of the show posted everywhere. Kyuhyun particularly likes one screencap where he randomly peered into the video camera. Hello, world. He doesn't like doing 'aegyo', but sometimes, the cute is useful - fans fawn over it, which makes it pretty okay in Kyuhyun's book.
Kyuhyun likes photographs because it is a form of truth-telling. Cameras never judge, never obscures facts with biases. Cameras tell you things exactly the way they are, and translate the stories into Polaroids or pixels. The downside of this is that photographs can also testify to things Kyuhyun would rather forget. From bad skin to equally bad hair, Kyuhyun cringes at the thought of imperfection immortalized, especially when it is of things beyond his control, like acne and overly-enthusiastic stylists' lack of good fashion sense.

Kyuhyun is grateful that he has a serious-looking face, one that actually requires reading. He doesn't like giving away too much about himself - it is enough that he bares his heart when he sings. But there are faces that give away anything and everything, like Donghae's.
Donghae's face is an interesting study: Kyuhyun sees it more like a blank canvas, really. Donghae's command of facial expressions is amazing - not that anyone actually notices, but Kyuhyun notes the way Donghae's face lights up with the slightest lift of the corner of his lips, how Donghae transforms from innocent to intense with a single blink (Kyuhyun figures that there must be a switch in Donghae's head that activates with a simple flutter of the eyelashes), and Kyuhyun marvels how no two pictures of Donghae are ever the same, not even the ones that are seemingly identical. Kyuhyun is awed with the way Donghae bares his soul to the camera without even intending to. Kyuhyun likes photographs because through them, Donghae holds no secrets from him.

Kyuhyun looks at photographs from press conferences and performances in China, and he realizes that Donghae is getting a bit tired. There were shadows in his eyes now, and though makeup can conceal eyebags, the photographs show Kyuhyun that Donghae needs to breathe (-that Donghae needs him).
(Kyuhyun thinks of Korea, of home, of the boys they left behind. Sometimes he surfs the Internet just to check on his other hyungdeul: Heenim's minihompy, Shindong on ShimShimTapa - Kyuhyun feels the need to see how they all are, reading them through the photographs. He is relieved they're all doing fine, everyone accounted for.
He sees an old photograph of Donghae and himself in a fancafe, and Kyuhyun feels the urge to smack himself - how can he forget the one person who has never left his side?)
Kyuhyun watches Donghae dance, another solo on yet another Chinese television show. Donghae looks exhausted behind his quiet smile. The PD cues for the commercial break after Donghae floors the audience with his presence. Kyuhyun sees Zhoumi nod when Donghae takes his seat. Kyuhyun asks Ryeowook to switch places: and now it's Ryeowook beside Zhoumi, but still beside Henry. Kyuhyun slips into the seat on Henry's left. Donghae looks up when he feels Kyuhyun's hand on his thigh, Kyuhyun offering a small smile. Donghae doesn't speak, but covers Kyuhyun's hand with his own, while listening intently to the PD's instructions. Kyuhyun strains to hear the Korean translator over the rush of Mandarin, while giving Donghae's knee a soft squeeze. Donghae smiles absently. Kyuhyun hopes that the fans are taking photos. He'd like to see this moment frozen in time.
(Sometime on a weekend, after their schedule ends, Kyuhyun finds Donghae curled up on the couch, fast asleep. Kyuhyun watches Donghae at rest, Donghae without the harsh lights and loud screams and all that attention: Donghae without the pressure and without the pain. Kyuhyun finds himself sitting down on the edge of the couch, close to Donghae's feet, watching Donghae as he sleeps. Kyuhyun closes his eyes and breathes in time with the rise and fall of Donghae's chest.
Kyuhyun feels Donghae's feet on his lap, so he opens his eyes. He is welcomed by Donghae's drowsy twinkling eyes. As Donghae shifts to curl up against Kyuhyun, a sleepy smile on his face, Kyuhyun moves to make Donghae fit snugly at his side.)
