Yeah, I don't see aesthetics as making a great political statement...unless you are a high-placed politician whose vote actually counts, it is hard to make a meaningful political statement short of illegal acts, like assassination. But I could see piercings and tattoos as shots fired in what I call "aesthetic warfare." I reshape the appearance of myself and my surroundings to my liking.
Did you know that you have to fill in a box for "race" on marriage license forms? That seems an outdated concept, from the days when it wasn't illegal to give you $%!t about "mixed marriages."
