I watched that series when I was a kid, but we (my sisters and I) liked it because we loved the stories, the book series was kind of a reading staple in our house. I still have fond memories of it. I've seen accounts of other books written about the actual family and their history, that make this sound pretty accurate- their family moved SO often, things just never seemed to work out the way Charles planned. Or didn't plan, if that was the case. And I have absolutely known men who fit the moniker "manchild". Whether it's a personality type or a kind of learned ineptness supported by everyone around them, I don't know.
I've actually never read the main series (which is part of why I was so confused I have this book). I could see reading them being a completely different experience though, since Laura wouldn't see all the things that her mother and other adults would spot. Charles was just loving "pa" to her.
I think one of the biggest issues was that he never planned, yeah. He just expected everything to magically work out. While Caroline's father died while she was really young and the family went hungry a lot, so she was very much a planner... not that he listened to her at all, so it just increased her stress.

As always, thank you for warning us of books to avoid, not just books to enjoy.
