The gentleman with the thistledown hair is waiting at the crooked apple tree for Tom Jones. He hasn't been able to find him lately, for some reason, and it worries him--he is eager to continue their lessons, and he wonders if Tom is intentionally hiding himself with magic. Or, you know, possibly Tom is a dog.

Tom is still looking for the big cat. Eventually, he wanders by the gentleman's tree and stops to sniff him. He smells wrong and Tom's fur starts to bristle and he growls a little.

The gentleman regards the dog with interest. "There's an enchantment on you--but it's not a magician's, nor is it a fairy's. What are you?" He attempts to circle around Tom and examine him from various angles.

Tom keeps moving around to follow the gentleman. He doesn't trust him as a dog.

He's a smart dog. The gentleman lunges (briefly, Tom might see or scent flashes of him with feathers, fur, scales; impossibly sharp teeth) and then holds Tom up by his scruff, turning him this way and that to examine him. "Someone has changed your shape, have they? We'll see what you had once been--" And as quickly as that, he's holding Tom by the back of his neck. "Good evening! Little wonder I've been unable to find you, unfortunately suited as you were in fur and paws--"
